"HOLLYWOOD BEAT" ON LOCATION AT CLARK GABLE'S 100th BIRTHDAY PARTY

By Donna Jeffries & Larry Leverett

In honor of Clark Gable's 100th birthday on February 1st, 2001, The Cinema Arts Gallery in Beverly Hills, invited a few celebrities, threw a little party and unveiled the magnificent "Gable Century Exhibition". We knew we were in for a good time, when the first person who walked up to us was Mr. Gable himself - but alas, it was just his lookalike &endash; but a very good one indeed, complete with the "Gone With The Wind" suit, "I-don't-give-a-damn" voice, and immortal grin.

Few actors have come close
to the fame and glory of Clark Gable, the prototype of rugged masculinity and the definition of strong-jaw virtue. Appealing to generations of both men and women alike, there has been no other movie star of Gable's magnitude. He stamped his image into the public's consciousness in 92 motion pictures, including the most popular of all time, "Gone With The Wind."

To celebrate the original "King of Hollywood" and his enduring influence on popular culture, Cinema Arts presented this exposition, featuring the works of some of the greatest photographers of all time, including Laszlo Willinger, George Hurrell and C.S. Bull. Spotlighting over 100 magnificent stills from the Edward Weston Collection, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, The Motion Picture & Television Photo Archive, The Magnum Agency and the Kobal Collection, this special exhibit includes images that have not been seen in over a generation. The public has never seen many of these images at all. Included in the exhibition is in intriguing mix of memorabilia, including Gable film costumes, personal and production scripts, signed contracts, vintage posters, lobby cards, and rare six-sheets.

We were overwhelmed
at the event by not only the exquisite collection of movie stills and portraits of the "sexiest man that ever lived", but also of some of the sexiest women still alive &endash; Ageless movie queen Mamie Van Doren wowed everyone with her charm and wit. And Carol Baker, who once played blonde bombshell Jean Harlow in the 1960's film "Harlow", also dazzled the crowd. Among the other guests was Actor Kevin McCarthy, who Larry worked with back in the 60's on the controversial film, "If He Hollers, Let Him Go". McCarthy is also known for his roles in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", and "Death of a Salesman". Another fascinating guest at the party was actor, H.M. Wynant, who worked with Gable on one of the "King's" last films, "Run Silent, Run Deep", and is also known for his roles in several classic TV series such as "Twilight Zone", "Mission Impossible", "Wild, Wild West" and "Gunsmoke". Wynant reminisced with us about the memorable dinner parties he used to attend with Gable at the old Hollywood hot spot, "Romanoff's".
Legendary film producer A.C. Lyles
was also at the party to celebrate Gable's birthday. A.C. is one of the last remaining original producers that have been with Paramount Studios since the beginning. He's known for producing some of America's best-loved westerns, including the "Hoppalong Cassidy" films, as well as several James Cagney films. At one time, he was also the official Hollywood Liaison for the White House. Larry and I also had the good fortune of meeting up with some other nice folks at the Gable Gala, including charming author, Devra Hill who also has a talk-radio show on KABC, and publisher, Irwin Zucker who is the founder of the Book Publicists of So. CA.. Mr. Zucker invited Larry and I to the BPSC's upcoming gala, at the Sportsman's Lodge. Many famous authors are members of the BPSC. Ought to be some party. So until then, this is Donna & Larry for "Hollywood Beat", and that's a wrap!

Quotes:
"Gable was as certain as the sunrise. He was consistently and stubbornly all men."

From the New York Times obituary of Clark Gable

"They come to see me, because I know life is great, and they know I know it." - Clark Gable
