"Buster"
/ Directed by John Carr
VRA4040
- "Buster Ladd" --
a
80 Minute WebPlay Feature Film. Director:
John Carr; Animation Director: Troy Cory.
The Actors: Troy
Cory;
Toni
Covington;
Hildegard Wendt; Troy Cory Jr.; Ken R.
Burton; Bud Waite; Connie White;
John
Carr;
Grant Warrick; Paul Kosty; Joan Yap;
Edward Kelley; Rosemary Alexandra; Charles
Andrese; Gale Ryman; Bernadette Navas; Bob
Briscoe; Scott Stubblefield; Keith Jr.;
Cindy Noble; Terre Schneider;
Jerry
Zorthian;
Larry Taylor.
-----
If
ever a film seemed rooted in a specific
time period, it's "Buster". This
pre-feminist, pre-AIDS, water-bed
generation film about the 60s, is not only
tied to a specific president, it is linked
to several well-known actors, actresses
and Telepathy.
-----
Filmed
in 1968 and 1969, it's part of the
work-in-process film product that includes
two other films all directed by John Carr
and co-produced by John C. Harris, "Star
Maker" and "Model Killer". Each scene and
character became enlarged with each
location chosen; Munich, Berlin, Venice,
Italy, Pasadena and Hollywood.
-----
"Star
Maker" was the excuse to film a motion
picture in the Communist sector of Berlin,
in 1968. It was a study, in which it would
attempt to define the difference in the
"sex-life" in the free zone of Berlin vs.
a Communist Berlin. Rolf Eden's legendary
playboy club "the Big Eden" is
featured.
-----
Buster
Ladd was an un-apologetic swinger/actor
who loved and left, all of the "women",
including a famous German movie star,
(Barbara Valentin) -- in all of the zones
without regret! Well, until he's last seen
back in America, with Hilda, (Hildegard
Wendt) -- the girl friend of (Barbara
Valentin), suspiciously spying on the
hilltops above Pasadena. The
Jerry
Zorthian;
ranch overlooks the rocket/space research
center, JPL and Cal-Tech. The theme songs
Relax and Rat, Tat, Tat are iconized in
the V.A.T.S. -- NBS100
brain-fingerprinting Art Room of this
inventive on location production.
-----
On its
surface, the film traces the life of two
twin brothers' quest, Dr. Peter Ladd and
Buster Ladd, to understand the fate of
their liberal movie-star mom, who
mysteriously died in a bedroom fire. It is
about accepting the truth.
-----
The
film follows the Twins, (both played by
Troy Cory), as they explore the use of
Radio and Television, and the art of
Telepathy. It's Dr. Peter Ladd's ability
to use his artful hypnotic powers to
transmit mental thoughts, by utilizing the
five senses, visual, audio, touch and
pheromones to sell products, goods and
service on a TV program they end up
co-hosting. His act steals the show, "Flip
Flop".
-----
The
hypnosis themed film, uses the names and
visual drawings of the inventors of the
electromagnetic wave frequency as a guide
to explain "brain fingerprinting" to the
audience and how it is stored in the
brain.

"Star
Maker" / Directed by John Carr
-----
Star
Maker is about a once-famous movie
director Paul Lamont, played by (Wendell
Corey). Paul had fallen on hard times and
Hollywood has forgotten him. His pictures
are no longer in vogue.
-----
Borrowing
air fare from his ex-wife, played by (Lisa
Pera), Wendell flies to Berlin, where a
former colleague and studio mogul, Irving
Rykoff, played by actor Paul Norman, is
producing three films. A hotel maid,
(Barbara Valentin) -- recognizes Wendell's
celebrity name and makes a play for him.
He falls in love with Barbara, and is
entranced by the maid-full duties
throughout a May-September Berlin Hotel
romance.
-----
Barbara
is completely amoral and breaks Wendell's
heart, running away with a German playboy
club owner, the famous Rolf Eden, she
meets at the Cork (Ireland) Film Festival.
(Rolf Eden, plays himself). While,
drowning his woes in schnapps at the hotel
bar, Wendell (Paul) -- encounters Buster
Ladd, a popular American singer/recording
artist, (Troy Cory), and a California
beauty contest winner, (Jean London).
-----
Unwittingly,
the trio, Wendell, Troy and Jean, are
working for a quasi-movie production
group, as a Hollywood front for a team of
U.S. counterspy agents.
-----
Jean,
who had just been seduced and abandoned by
the studio mogul during the Cork Film
Festival, falls for Wendell's line; and
talks Buster (Troy), into making a play
for Barbara. Of course, this is to
break-up the romance between Rolf and
Barbara to help Wendell get revenge.
-----
For
their efforts in helping Wendell break the
Rolf/Barbara romance, Wendell falls for
Jean in a sweet romantic way, and Buster,
with official U.S. O.K.'s, follows the
Rolf Eden life-style around Berlin in
Rolf's black limo. The rest is history,
Buster, Rolf Eden and Barbara, are filmed
singing and swinging at the "Eden playboy"
club, attended by both the spy worlds of
the Communist and U.S./German Allies.
-----
Seeking
solace together, Wendell and Jean retreat
to Hollywood, where she waitresses at a
Boulevard cafe, always encouraging
Wendell, who drinks free coffee, dreaming
of a comeback, hopefully perusing the
pages of the trade papers. Buster (Troy)
returns to Hollywood to make the sequels
to "Star Maker", "Buster" and "Model
Killer", starring Buster Ladd, Paul
Norman, and Wendell Corey.
*Note: The
Hollywood scenes of Wendell and Jean were
filmed before the location shots in Berlin
and Ireland. Mr. Wendell Corey died in
November 1968, a couple of weeks after
returning from Berlin. Actor, Paul Norman,
was also the featured star of "Model
Killers" and cameo player in "Buster".
Thoughts:
The Executive Producer
During
his lifetime John C. Harris,
used the daily newspaper as true
interpretations
about murder, rape, spies and the
Holocaust.
-----
He
also used the news as a brazen way to
create and sell a film treatment about
something he was familiar with, "the birds
and the bees" and government officials.
The confirmed bachelor theorized that
sexual indifference's were "caused by a
major war" and was directly related to
class conflicts, political ideology and
religion. This DVD attempts to visually
explain a few of John's newspaper
viewpoints, and what question in his mind,
would have inspired him to do a movie
about the following. What was the purpose
of headlining the opening paragraphs made
by England's molecular researcher,
geneticist, Steve Jones, in several major
newspapers?
-----
"Ejaculate,
if you are so minded and equipped, into a
glass of chilled Perrier, there you will
see a formless object. If you look hard
enough and concentrate -- you will see the
baby" -- so read the article about the
eighteenth-century biologist's sex
theory.
-----
The
newspaper puffed along about the male's
gift to the female, "was of so much labor
and energy", that the only job for the
female recipient, after conception, was to
incubate the child. So believable, in the
19th and 20th centuries, the sole roll of
the wife was a mere seedbed, a step below
the husband in society, in the household,
and, most of all, in herself.
-----
"Foolish
of course, and quite wrong", John would
have said, "for biology proves that man,
and not woman, has always been the "second
sex" -- ask my Miss Universe and Hawaiian
Tropic Beauty Pageant buddy's, Donald
Trump or Ron Rice, they'll confirm
it."
Cantor,
Bert. The Bernie Cornfield
Story.
New York: Lyle Stuart, Inc., 1970.
-----
Bernie
Cornfield attained millionaire status as
the head of Investors Overseas Service,
headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Born
in Turkey, raised in Brooklyn, Cornfield
was a one-time socialist and social worker
who in 14 years built an overseas empire
controlling over two billion dollars in
other people's assets. Yet, by 1970,
Bernie and his IOS empire were crumbling,
but Bernie "didn't believe he was
through." First edition, hardbound with
illustrations and dust jacket.
