LOS ANGELES,
CA---FEBRUARY 26, 2001---The Rising Place
(www.therisingplace.com), an atmospheric, coming-of-age
feature from first-time director/producer Tom Rice, took
home the Grand Jury Prize from the Malibu International Film
Festival. The ceremony, held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel
in Santa Monica on February 25, 2001, honored
director/producer Tom Rice with the award for Best Feature
recognizing excellence in the direction, production, design
and cinematography of The Rising Place.
"It's a very blue-ribbon
style film...a very high-quality independent film," said
Festival founder David Katz. On hand to present the awards
during the 2nd Annual Malibu International Film Festival
were James Cameron, Roger Corman, and Festival Master of
Ceremonies Stacy Keach. Others honored at the Gala event
included Shirley McClaine, Charles Bronson, Lloyd Bridges
(posthumously), Arthur Hiller, and Nick Nolte.
The Grand Jury Prize
award for The Rising Place takes its place among six other
awards the film has already received. Other recent accolades
awarded to The Rising Place include two MOXIE! Awards from
the Santa Monica International Film Festival - one to Tom
Rice for producing and directing, and the other to industry
veteran Conrad Pope for Best Composer, honoring the movie's
original score. The film also won Best Dramatic Feature, a
Crystal Heart Award and a Visionary Award for
director/producer Tom Rice (past winners include three-time
recipient Steven Spielberg and Frank Darabont) during the
Heartland Film Festival. The Rising Place also received the
Audience Award at the Boston Film Festival.
This first-time feature,
also written by Rice, was filmed in Jackson, Mississippi.
Set against the picturesque landscape of the Mississippi
Delta in the 1940's, The Rising Place follows the close
friendship of two young women, each of a different race, and
their struggle to find purpose in their lives during this
time of social injustice and world war.
With a respectable
ensemble cast (Frances Fisher, Laurel Holloman, Elise Neal,
Gary Cole, Billy Campbell), and original songs by both David
Foster and Jennifer Holliday, The Rising Place has garnered
both mainstream audience approval and critical
acclaim.
