Bob
Hope -
Bob
Hope, throughout the years, has been
hailed by critics and fans as "The King of
Comedy," "Mr. Humanitarian" and "The
Chairman of American Humor." When
presenting Bob with the nation's highest
award: The Congressional Gold Medal,
President Kennedy called Bob "America's
most prized ambassador of good will
throughout the world."
-----Bob
was what you call -- a triple-threat star.
That is, a star of radio, film and
television during the 1940s and 1950s.
Primarily a comedian, Bob also acted, sang
and danced a little, hosted his own radio
and television shows, and carried on a
famous comic feud with one of his best
friends, crooner Bing Crosby. Bob spent
much of World War II traveling the world
to entertain Allied troops, a service he
also performed during later wars in Korea,
Vietnam, and the Middle East. Though his
superstar years ended in the 1960s, Bob
continued to make appearances well into
the 1990s -- and has received five
honorary Academy Awards for his
contributions to Hollywood's largest
industry.
-----In
the entire history of show business, no
individual has traveled so far - so often
- to entertain so many, as comedian Bob
Hope. Nor has any entertainer been
acclaimed for his talents and humanitarian
efforts by so many - so often.

BOB HOPE Bob
Hope was born on May 29, 1903
Eltham, England 04.
Bob, throughout the
years, has been hailed by critics and fans
as "The King of Comedy," "Mr.
Humanitarian" and "The Chairman of
American Humor." When presenting Bob with
the nation's highest award: The
Congressional Gold Medal, President
Kennedy called Bob "America's most prized
ambassador of good will throughout the
world." Perhaps the title that suits him
best is "Mr. Entertainment."
-----
Four times, Bob has
been honored by the United States
Congress. The most recent tribute was in
October 1997 when Resolution 75 was
unanimously passed by members of both
houses, making Bob Hope an "Honorary
Veteran" - the first individual so honored
in the history of the United States.
-----
Bob Hope was feted
in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda by members of
the House of Representatives, the Senate,
veterans and the military. The following
day, Bob, with family and friends, visited
the White House Oval Office to witness the
signing of the resolution by President
Clinton.
-----
When informed of
the honor, Bob said, "I've been given many
awards in my lifetime, but to be numbered
among the men and women I admire the most
-- is the greatest honor I have ever
received."
