MAGAZINE'S NEWS STAFF AND INTERNS ATTEND
THE HRTS NEWSMAKER LUNCHEON HONORING ABC'S
TED KOPPEL IN HOLLYWOOD
APRIL 20TH 2004 -
Staff members of Television
International Magazine, founded by Sam
Donaldson and Al Preiss, in 1956, attended
the HRTS event honoring Ted Koppel, with
two of its editors, Josie Cory, Mike
Lipman, and tvinews.com personalities Ron
Rice, and Troy Cory and 3 HTnews interns,
headed by Kristina Carroll. After a mild
scuffle with HRTS security, as to
why so many pretty news interns were
attending the event, the news staff heard
Ted Koppel speak about the many changes
that have taken place in the broadcasting
industry.
------
"TV Broadcasting
news has seen better days. It's too
entertainment oriented," Ted Koppel told
the Radio and Television News Directors
Assn. The day before the event, Ted
received the Paul White Award from in Las
Vegas with Jon Stewart making the
presentation, on tape, per Koppel's
request.
------Mr.
Koppel was the Hollywood Radio and
Television Society's honoree at Merv
Griffin's Beverly Hilton Hotel, with ABC's
Bob Iger making the introduction. Koppel
found that Ed Murrow had given that same
warning -- about entertainment-oriented
news -- to the same group (HRTS) back in
1958." But Koppel also allows there is an
"extraordinary amount of good work also
being done" in the field. He can certainly
take credit for doing those "good
works."
------
Koppel, who was the
"on the spot" war correspondant with the
Army's Third Infantry Division for five
weeks moving across Iraq into Baghdad,
chronicling the fall of the city, has
reported on Iraq first-hand from the
invasion and returned to Iraq in January
2004. He has no plans to return --at least
"not in the near future." As for the
current situation in Iraq, he says, "We're
stuck with it and there's no alternative.
We cannot pull out." On the domestic
political scene, he says of the upcoming
Demo and GOP conventions, "I'm not sure
I'll be there." Of course ABC will cover,
but he says fuller coverage "would be a
waste of money". He also reminded his ABC
boss, that it was up to the "old guard" to
keep Nightline on forever, "after he
retires".

This was Mr.
Koppel's first visit to the legendary HRTS
newsmaker Lunchon Series. - TC,
