FOX
TELEVISION: A FOURTH NETWORK? By KARRE SLAFKIN.
Taking advantage of the relative lack of late-night
fare available on network television, Fox is
successfully wooing a lot of night owls with a
veritable menu of innovative evening and late
evening programs that deal with everything from the
public and private life of a fictional U.S.
president (starring George C, Scott as the
president), to the problems of modern-day singles
and married, to an updated 1960s style variety
show, a weekly style variety show, a weekly
one-hour news magazine and the adventures of a
werewolf. But will alternative programming help Fox
to become television's fourth network
?

FORECASTING THE FUTURE: Children's television
programming is undergoing a major facelift not only
by the networks, but by the syndicators and cable
as well. Though each is going about it differently,
the common thread--besides a collective push for
higher-quality programming overall--is the move
toward "softer" children's programming, live-action
shows and the return--in an updated version--of
classic animated characters. Industry updated
version--of classic animated characters. Industry
heads also project the emergence of interactive
toys that allow children direct contact with
television.
