Philbin and Gerhard Zeiler will receive
NATPE||Content First's 8th annual Brandon
Tartikoff Legacy
Award, to be
presented on Tuesday, Jan. 25 during the
NATPE 2011 Market & Conference, at the
Fontainebleau Resort in Miami
Beach.

Named in honor of Brandon Tartikoff,
arguably one of television's greatest
programmers, the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy
Award was created to recognize the
extraordinary passion, leadership,
independence and vision in creating
television programming that defined
Tartikoff's character and career.

spent 11 years as head of entertainment
programming for
NBC.

consider all that Brandon Tartikoff
accomplished as president of NBC
Entertainment, it's important to remember
how bad NBC was in 1981, when, at 31,
Tartikoff took over. But in a few short
years, after hits like
Cheers, Hill Street Blues, The Cosby Show,
Family Ties, Golden Girls and St.
Elsewhere, NBC was not only on top of the
ratings but did so with the creation of
programs that were to this day among the
best in TV

the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award
Recipients.
Tartikoff passed away in 1997, at the age
of 48, from Hodgkin's disease, which
he had fought-unknown to all but a few
close friends-since he was just out of
college. The Brandon Tartikoff Legacy
Awards began in 2004, and have become an
honor that program executives and creators
treasure.

the oversight of NATPE's Executive
Committee and the executive editorial

Dick Ebersol -
A prolific
producer and executive, Dick Ebersol is
currently the Chairman of NBC Universal
Sports & Olympics, and in the past
three decades has produced eight of the
top 10 most-watched television events in
U.S. history. Responsible for
award-winning sports, entertainment and
news productions, Ebersol negotiated an
unprecedented number of Summer and Winter
Olympics broadcasting rights deals for
NBC, establishing NBC as "America's
Olympic Network." Not only a powerhouse
sports broadcasting executive, Ebersol
also conceived and created Saturday Night
Live with Lorne Michaels. He was awarded
the Olympic Order in 1992 by the
International Olympic Committee and is a
part of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. •
Mary Hart - is the host of the No. 1
syndicated entertainment newsmagazine show in the
world, ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. For the past
29 seasons, Hart has interviewed some of
the most distinguished personalities in
entertainment while providing compelling
coverage of global events and major news.
She was the only journalist granted access
to Quincy Jones' all-star recording
session for "We are the World," and the
only entertainment journalist who
interviewed all presidential and
vice-presidential candidates during the
2008 presidential
campaign.

is a member of Broadcasting & Cable's
Hall of Fame and was awarded a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is also
actively involved in several philanthropic
organizations dedicated to children.
Earlier this year Hart announced that the
2010-2011 season will be her last as host
of ENTERTAINMENT
TONIGHT. • Regis
Philbin - is an Emmy Award-winning
broadcasting industry icon. Since first
stepping in front of the camera more than
40 years ago, he has ambitiously tackled
talk shows, game shows, the literary world
and even the music industry. Philbin is
best known for his many years as co-host
of the nationally-syndicated morning
program "LIVE! with Regis and Kelly." He
later took his
daytime success to primetime as host of
ABC's ratings juggernaut "Who Wants To Be
A Millionaire." • 03 Regis Philbin will resign
from his daily talk
show"Live!
With Regis and
Kelly." After 28 years, Philbin said
he will step down around the end of the
summer or fall, but he didn't specify a
departure
date. • The
National Academy of Television Arts &
Sciences honored Philbin with a Daytime Emmy as
Outstanding Talk Show Host for "LIVE," and
another Emmy award as Outstanding Game
Show Host for "Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire." He has been inducted to the
National Association of Broadcasters Hall
of Fame and the Academy of Television Arts
& Sciences Hall of Fame, and was
honored with the Lifetime Achievement
Award at the 2008 Daytime Emmys. He also
holds the Guinness World Record™ for
"Most Hours on Camera." •
Gerhard Zeiler - is CEO of the
European television
and radio network RTL Group and member of
the Bertelsmann AG Executive Board. He is
the first international recipient of the
Award. During his tenure RTL Group has
impressively grown to have shareholdings
in 45 television channels and 32 radio
stations in 11 countries, becoming
Europe's leading family of entertainment
channels. Nearly 200 million people tune
into RTL networks every
day.

Zeiler's leadership, RTL Group has become
actively involved in worldwide content
production through its production arm,
Fremantle Media. The company currently
produces more than 300 programs and 10,000
hours of programming yearly in 57
countries including film and series.
Zeiler was named Media Personality of the

Hollywood Foreign Press Association is
known worldwide for its glittering Golden
Globe Awards ceremony held every January
and its multi-million dollar donations to
charity. The Hollywood Foreign Press
Association had humble origins that
stemmed solely from a group of
journalists' desire to cover all aspects
of the world of
entertainment.

Today's
organization has its roots in the early
1940s when Pearl Harbor had drawn America
into World War II. Audiences, hungry
for diversion, were seeking out films
offering escape, inspiration and
entertainment; and filmmakers such as
Orson Welles, Preston Sturges, Darryl
Zanuck and Michael Curtiz were working
hard to fulfill the
need.
•••
Amid
the turmoil of war and the difficulties
with communications, a handful of Los
Angeles-based overseas journalists banded
together to share contacts, information
and material. The idea was not a new one:
previously, in 1928 the Hollywood
Association of Foreign Correspondents
(HAFCO) had been formed and, in 1935, the
Foreign Press Society appeared. Both were
short-lived. •
In 1943 the journalists, led by -- the
correspondent for Britain's Daily Mail,
formed the Hollywood
Foreign Correspondents Association
and conceived the motto "Unity Without
Discrimination of Religion or
Race." It was an uphill struggle at
first as the film industry had not yet
realized the importance of foreign
markets. At first the members held
informal gatherings in private homes. As
the membership grew, HFPA meetings were
held in larger quarters, with the
association selecting the Hollywood
Roosevelt Hotel as the location for group
functions.

The
group's first special event was a luncheon
in December 1947, at which a meritorious
plaque was awarded to Harry M.
Warner.
•••
As
representatives of the world press, the
group's members felt it was incumbent upon
them to give their audience their
judgments as to Hollywood's finest
productions. The organization's first
awards presentation for distinguished
achievements in the film industry took
place in early 1944 with an informal
ceremony at 20th Century
Fox.
•••
In
1945, the members of the association held
a contest to find a design for a statuette
that would best represent the overall aims
of the organization. Marina
Cisternas, president (1945-46) presented
the idea for a golden globe encircled with
a strip of motion picture film, and
mounted on a
pedestal. •
In
1950 differing philosophies among members
-- created
a schism within the organization,
resulting in a split into two separate
groups -- The Hollywood Foreign
Correspondents Association and the Foreign
Press Association of
Hollywood.

For
a time, the two organizations existed side
by side, with one group handing out Golden
Globes while the other awarded Henriettas,
named for their president, Henry
Gris. •

The
separation ended in 1955 when the
journalists reunited under the collective
title "The Hollywood Foreign Press
Association" with firm guidelines and
requirements for
membership.

During
its early years the HFPA established
itself with the studios by innovations
such as its World Favorites awards, which
it came up with by polling more than 900
newspapers, magazines and radio stations
around the world. The group also came up
with the idea of "bon voyage" interview
lunches with actors and actresses who were
leaving to make films in countries
represented by the
members.

In
1955 the Golden Globes began honoring
achievements in television as well as in
film. •
The HFPA is currently celebrating its 66th
-- anniversary
in Hollywood. Today, the Golden
Globes recognize achievements in 25
categories; 14 in motion pictures and 11

since

way in front of us, there is a key reason
that we are on it at all.

leader who has recast the White House's

with a talented team, a determined federal
judge and an unusually capable congress,

Munich. Having toured the whole world, he

York explained,
Congress recognized that the Internet
couldn't function if broadband providers,
search engines and hosting services were
held liable for every unauthorized copy
made on their networks. The Digital
Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 protected

Arts Degree from the Ohio State
University. He was named one of fifty
outstanding Cincinnatians on the 200th
anniversary of the City along with
luminaries such as Ted Turner, Dr. Albert

one of the top 50 students of Elder High
School, where he gave the commencement
address on the 50th anniversary of the
school. Additionally, Fries was awarded
the Frederic W. Ziv Award, established by
the pioneering syndicator, for his
outstanding accomplishments in television
by the University of Cincinnati Electronic
Media Division of the University's

that poker evovled in the 1400's as
a European game. However, Poker
in America started in Mississippi on
riverboats and was a compliment

with a 20 card deck that only
contained aces, kings, queens, jacks

The big step in the evolution of poker was
in Neveda where it was declared
illegal in 1910.
In California the Attorney
General declared it a game of skill,
thus anti-gambling laws couldn't stop the
masses from playing poker. Then,
in 1931 poker was declared
a legal game in Nevada.

administration has yet to tackle head on
but which looms large in the coming

ruling, issued Wednesday by a WTO panel in
Geneva, called on China to stop requiring

companies to sell music over the Internet,
a potentially huge opportunity for
companies such as Apple Inc., with its
iTunes. China has the largest number of
Internet users, but piracy online and in
the streets is rampant.

China has complied with past WTO rulings
against it, analysts say Beijing could
appeal the latest decision, which could
drag out the case for many more months.
