A
Child in Berlin: The Poignant Story of Heidi
Posnien
and
Her Mother During the Fall of
Germany
A Survivor of
Berlin's WWII Atrocities Embodies Childhood
Resilience
OGDEN, Utah, March 15, 2025 -- Heidi
Posnien, now 88, enjoys a peaceful life in a
farmhouse overlooking a lake -- worlds apart
from her childhood in Nazi-occupied Germany,
where she and her mother survived unimaginable
circumstances. Despite the immense hardships she
has endured in her lifetime, including outliving
her husband and children, Posnien chooses
gratitude for simple abundance, freedom and
safety.
"I don't believe in wallowing
in self-pity," Posnien said. "You just go ahead
with life and live life the best you can. And
the more you do for other people, the less you
worry about yourself."
Posnien shared her strikingly
clear memories with professional biographer
Rhonda Lauritzen, recalling in vivid detail the
fear and uncertainty that permeated
Nazi-infested Berlin during World War II;
memories of her mother, Käthe, a rising
star in Germany's opera scene; and her
remarkable survival in a bombed-out apartment
during the final weeks of the war. She lived
alone at just 9 years old.
"When we read a story like
Heidi's, it becomes part of us," Lauritzen said.
"We can feel it vicariously. I promise the
readers will not forget this story. It changes
us. It changes our perspective. And it will
change you in ways you don't see
coming."
A Child in Berlin is the
remarkable true story of Heidi Posnien, her
mother and their courage in the face of Nazi
terror as told to Lauritzen. Käthe is a
mother who must choose between her conscience
and her dreams of becoming an opera star. She
discovers the truth about what is happening to
her Jewish friends around the time she attends a
dinner party presided by Adolf Hitler himself.
She realizes she cannot remain among Nazi
society and makes the gut-wrenching choice to
leave the opera. To support herself and young
Heidi, she joins Berlin's black-market network
and ends up dealing in more than just food. As
others evacuate the capital, Käthe harbors
a secret that anchors them in the epicenter of
danger.
While Käthe becomes ever
more preoccupied with survival, Heidi and a
roving pack of friends make mischief in Berlin's
rubble. The war devolves, and she braves hunger,
cold and feelings of abandonment as she shuttles
between Berlin and the Polish countryside.
Heidi's ultimate test comes when she must
survive alone in a bombed-out apartment during
the final weeks of World War II. Her moxie shows
how children are capable of far more than adults
realize.
Heidi Posnien married an
American soldier after the war. She now lives in
Huntsville, Utah. Her story serves as a reminder
of the resilience and strength of the human
spirit, even in the darkest of times. Her
firsthand account of life in Nazi-occupied
Berlin offers a unique perspective on a pivotal
moment in world history. As she nears her 90th
birthday, Posnien continues to share her story
in the hopes of educating future generations
about the terrible consequences of war and the
importance of standing up against tyranny.
"I've been down in the deepest sorrows, but I've
also been on the best of highs too," Posnien
said. "I've eaten this big, beautiful life; I
never let it eat me."

PLAYED:

Summer Olympics Were More Than Just Games: New Book
Sounds Real-World
Alarms
WINTHROP, Mass. -- As
the 2024 Paris Olympics quickly approach, a new
book co-authored by Richard Kaufman and Glenn
Allen, PLAYED: The Games of the 1936 Berlin
Olympics, harkens to a different era with some
startlingly similar realities with worldwide
impacts. Historical figures and events play a role
as the writers unravel a gripping story that could
serve as a warning signal for world leaders in 2024
and beyond.
Sportswriters will say that
their job is often mockingly referred to as the
"toy department" of news, as if fun and games are
unimportant. A newly released book, PLAYED: The
Games of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, illustrates just
how significant and historic the sporting world can
be.
Co-authors Richard Kaufman
and Glenn Allen take readers into a time and place
when the world felt like it was teetering on the
brink of war, Nazi Germany was rattling its sabers,
and one of the most memorable of all Olympic Games
was taking place in Berlin.
PLAYED blends politics,
sports, espionage and courage, all in a real-world
setting where the most popular hero was American
sprinter and long jumper Jesse Owens, who won four
gold medals. That stuck a needle in Adolf Hitler's
attempt to use the games to prove his theory of
Aryan racial superiority.
PLAYED feels real because it
is based on real events, real outcomes and real
people, including American Olympic Committee
President Avery Brundage, Franklin Delano
Roosevelt, Charlie Chaplin, Joseph Goebbels and Eva
Braun.
The authors say the most
important message of their story is that history
must not repeat itself ... a poignant thought in
this, the year of the 2024 Paris Olympics, where
Russian and Belarusian athletes are banned from
participating in team sports due to the war in
Ukraine.
Dr. Thomas Law gave PLAYED
five stars and wrote in his review, "To those of us
who are history buffs, this is a must-read,
especially if you are enthralled with the events
leading up to the Second World War, xenophobia,
lust for power and their current implications
Although the book presents itself as 'a
novel,' the people and events are real. This makes
the dialogue (the fictional parts, I presume) come
alive and seem likely to have happened."
About the Authors
Richard Kaufman and Glenn Allen have been writing
together for over 25 years. They have numerous
projects in development, including scripted feature
films, a docuseries and television series, and they
have co-written and produced two a
ward-winning independent films, all under the
banner of their company, Green Bandana.

British government approves Julian Assange's
Extradition to
US (AP)
LONDON
-- June 17, 2022. The British government on Friday
has ordered the extradition of the WikiLeaks
co-founder Julian Assange to the US, to face spying
charges, by his website's publication of classified
U.S. documents.
WikiLeaks
immediately released a statement to say it would
appeal against the decision. "Today is not the end
of the fight," it said. "It is only the beginning
of a new legal battle. We will appeal through the
legal system; the next appeal will be before the
high court." Assange's lawyers have 14 days to file
the appeal.
The case passed to the
British home secretary last month after the UK
supreme court ruled that there were no legal
questions over assurances given by US authorities
on Assange's likely treatment.
Assange's wife, Stella
Assange, a lawyer who married her husband in a
prison ceremony in March, said the U.K. decision
marked "a dark day for press freedom and for
British democracy." "We're not at the end of the
road here," and "We're going to fight this."
"Julian did nothing wrong,"
she said. "He has committed no crime and is not a
criminal. He is a journalist and a publisher, and
he is being punished for doing his job."
The statement said anyone
who cared about freedom of expression should be
"deeply ashamed".
Julian Assange has battled
in British courts for years to avoid being sent to
the U.S., where he faces 17 charges of espionage
and one charge of computer misuse.
The saga was triggered in
2010 when WikiLeaks published a series of leaks
provided by the then US army soldier Chelsea
Manning, as well as a dump of more than 250,000 US
diplomatic cables, some of which were published in
the Guardian and elsewhere, containing classified
diplomatic analysis from world leaders. The US
government launched a criminal investigation into
the leak
Also in 2010, an arrest
warrant for Assange was issued for two separate
sexual assault allegations in Sweden. The UK ruled
that he should be extradited to Sweden. This
prompted him to enter the Ecuadorian embassy in
London in August 2012, claiming political asylum.
He feared that if he was extradited to Sweden he
would in turn be extradited to the US.
Assange finally left the
embassy in 2019. He was arrested in the UK for
skipping bail and ultimately jailed, then
extradition proceedings to the US were started
against him.
American prosecutors say the
Australian citizen helped U.S. Army intelligence
analyst Chelsea Manning steal classified diplomatic
cables and military files that WikiLeaks later
published, putting lives at risk.
To his supporters, Assange,
50, is a secrecy-breaking journalist who exposed
U.S. military wrongdoing in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
A British court ruled in
April that Assange could be sent to face trial in
the U.S., sending the case to the U.K. government
for a decision. Britain's interior minister, Home
Secretary Priti Patel, signed the order authorizing
Assange's extradition.
The Home Office said in a
statement that the government had to approve his
move to the U.S. because "the U.K. courts have not
found that it would be oppressive, unjust or an
abuse of process to extradite Mr. Assange."
Barry Pollack, Assange's
U.S. lawyer, said it was "disappointing news that
should concern anyone who cares about the First
Amendment and the right to publish."
Assange's lawyers said they
would mount a new legal challenge, and legal
experts say the case could take months or even
years more to conclude.
"We will appeal this all the
way, if necessary to the European Court of Human
Rights," Assange attorney Jennifer Robinson
said.
Robinson asked U.S.
President Joe Biden to drop the charges brought
against Assange during Donald Trump's presidency,
arguing they posed a "grave threat" to free speech.
Assange's father, John Shipton, also urged the U.S.
to drop the prosecution.
Assange's supporters and
lawyers maintain he was acting as a journalist and
is entitled to First Amendment protections of
freedom of speech. They argue that the case is
politically motivated, that he would face inhumane
treatment and be unable to get a fair trial in the
U.S.
Journalism organizations and
human rights groups had called on Britain to refuse
the extradition request. Assange's lawyers say he
could face up to 175 years in jail if he is
convicted in the U.S., though American authorities
have said any sentence is likely to be much lower
than that.
Amnesty International
Secretary General Agnes Callamard said Friday that
extraditing Assange "would put him at great risk
and sends a chilling message to journalists the
world over."
Assange
remains in London's high-security Belmarsh Prison,
where he has been since he was arrested in 2019 for
skipping bail during a separate legal battle.
Assange's supporters say his
physical and mental health are both under strain.
Stella Assange told a news conference that her
husband's condition was "deteriorating by the
day."
Associated Press writers Eric Tucker in Washington
and Bobby Caina Calvan in New York contributed.

SAG-AFTRA CONDEMNS THE ARREST OF JOURNALIST JOSIE
HUANG
LOS ANGELES (September
14, 2020) -- SAG-AFTRA today released the
following statement regarding the arrest of KPCC
journalist Josie Huang on Saturday:
This past Saturday, Los
Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies tackled, held
down, handcuffed and arrested SAG-AFTRA member
Josie Huang, a public media journalist with radio
station KPCC. Huang was visibly credentialed as a
working journalist and verbally identified herself
as a member of the press. She had done nothing to
warrant questioning much less arrest.
This is another deeply
troubling interaction in a string of police arrests
and often violent attacks on working journalists
who are abiding by the law and simply trying to do
their jobs.
SAG-AFTRA President
Gabrielle Carteris said, "These unconstitutional
attacks on the rights of a free press are appalling
and must stop now. SAG-AFTRA champions the U. S.
Constitution and the work of our journalist
members, whose primary role is to provide citizens
with the information they need to effectively
govern a democracy."
"The people's right to a
free press is guaranteed by the First Amendment to
the Constitution, which establishes that the press
shall be free from government interference in the
dissemination of information, ideas and opinions,"
Carteris added.
SAG-AFTRA National Vice
President, Broadcasters and journalist Bob Butler
said, "Reporters cover the news so that the public
is informed. It is outrageous that sheriff's
deputies arrested Huang, whose station
identification was clearly displayed while she
identified herself as a journalist several
times."
SAG-AFTRA and our members,
journalists and non-journalists alike, support a
free and unencumbered press and stand with any
journalist who might find his or her ability to
report on our government challenged or compromised.
SAG-AFTRA is calling on the
Los Angeles Sheriff's Department to drop all
charges and apologize to Josie Huang.
Statement issued by our member
journalists at KPCC:
"We offer condolences to the
two sheriff deputies who were shot Saturday
evening. These are challenging and stressful times
for everyone, but Josie was arrested while doing
her job. The charges should be dropped. Her arrest
is the latest in a series of troubling interactions
between our reporters and some local law
enforcement officers. Journalists provide an
essential service, providing fair, accurate and
timely journalism and without them, our
democracy is at risk."
We unreservedly condemn the
vicious attack on the deputies in Compton Saturday
night and hope that their assailant is caught and
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We
send our heartfelt wishes for the deputies' full
and complete recoveries, and express our deep
gratitude to them and to their colleagues who work
to keep our communities safe while respecting our
rights as citizens in a democratic
society.
