Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival
Complements Screenings with an Eclectic, Electric
Mix of Live Performances
HONOLULU -- Proving that music is the soundtrack to
our lives, the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International
Film Festival presents Movies, Music and More -- a
full complement of live musical performances by
Hawaii's leading musical talent. Scheduled to
appear at festival screenings are ukulele
impresario Jake Shimabukuro, kumu hula Robert
Cazimero, slack key master Keola Beamer and the
soulful John Cruz. In addition, L.A. based hip hop
group Far East Movement and legendary DJ and
producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura will headline
CUT & SCRATCH.
"Whether inspirational Hawaiian chants, the hard
licks of an ukulele master, or the thumping sounds
of hip-hop expression, music adds an empathic
exclamation point to every movie we screen," said
Chuck Boller, Executive Director of the LVHIFF. "It
is a natural fit to extend our programming to
include live performances, and makes a wonderful
festival truly remarkable."
The Brothers Cazimero will perform at the Sunset on
the Beach world premiere screening of NA KAMALEI:
MEN OF HULA on October 21 at 7:00 p.m. The film
chronicles Hawaii's only hula academy strictly for
men, headed by the enigmatic Robert Cazimero, and
showcases the masculine aspects of hula and the
gender stereotypes its practitioners overcome.
Jake Shimabukuro will perform twice at festival
events -- headlining the exclusive Halekulani

Opening
Night Celebration on October 19 (5:30 p.m. to 7:30
p.m.) and reprising his performance at
the
Closing Night
screening of HULA GIRLS at the Hawaii Theatre
Center. HULA GIRLS is a touching comedy based on a
true-story of one Japanese village's attempt to
spur its economy by creating a Hawaiian village.
Jake Shimabukuro composed many songs especially for
the film and will be performing them that evening.
The movie has garnered critical acclaim and is
Japan's entry for the Academy Awards® Best
Foreign Film.
The O Lounge will explode in a cacophony on October
20 (doors open at 8:00 p.m.) as the incomparable
Dan "The Automator" Nakamura presents a club
concert featuring Far*East Movement. Dan Nakamura's
renown, from his work with Gorillaz and Handsome
Boy Modeling School, will be matched by the sounds
of Far*East Movement, whose tracks were recently
featured in THE FAST & THE FURIOUS 3: TOKYO
DRIFT.
An inspirational evening is slated for October 26
at the Hawaii Theatre Center (7:30 p.m.), in
LVHIFF's annual HAWAII NIGHT: AN EVENING OF MUSIC
AND FILM. Keola Beamer and John Cruz take the stage
to present films based on their life and work, THE
SHIMMERING and MADE OF MUSIC: THE STORY OF JOHN
CRUZ, respectively. THE SHIMMERING, based on the
short story "It Swims When You Sleep" by
singer-songwriter Keola Beamer, with the 'aumakua
(protective diety) as the foundation for this
ethereal shark tale. MADE OF MUSIC: THE STORY OF
JOHN CRUZ is an unabashed and often harrowing look
at Cruz's struggles with drug addiction and his
ultimate redemption amid Hawaii's gentle shores.
HAWAII NIGHT promises to be an uplifting evening
showcasing Cruz's signature acoustic soul
stylings.
Complementing the live performances is a Hawaii
International Film Festival first, an entire
evening dedicated to music videos, entitled THE
FESTIVAL VIDEO iPOD. This eclectic mix of music
videos from Japan, South Korea, The Philippines
France, Israel and beyond will be presented on
October 24 (7:00 p.m.) at Next Door (43 N. Hotel
Street, 528-NEXT).
LVHIFF connects with the world one viewer at a
time, offering a vast compendium of film that
appeal to disparate audiences. Independent and
arthouse film enthusiasts take particular note of
screenings from the NOMINATED DOCUMENTARY, BIG
NIGHT and INDIE SPIRIT showcases, while LVHIFF's
distinct regional programming allow cineastes to
experience culturally relevant contemporary
filmmaking from 47 countries (special emphasis this
year in the Filipino Focus and Vietnam Redux
sections). Alternative showcases - ADRENALINE
CINEMA, LO-FI SHORTS and EXTREME ASIA - appeal to
students, Gen-Xers and the mavericks among us. The
26th Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film
Festival is from October 19 to 29. More than 250
feature films, documentaries, shorts and
animations, representing 47 countries will be
showcased. Oahu locations include Dole Cannery 18
Theatres and the Hawaii Theatre Center. For more
information about films, show times, and ticketing
