Evolution of a World Landmark - A look
at the evolution of the square and the
ancient Gate of Heavenly Peace that
overlooks it and gives TIANANMEN SQUARE
its name:
0618 - Tang
Dynasty (A D 618-907): First open space is
cleared on the eventual site of TIANANMEN
SQUARE for a courtyard leading to the
imperial family's home.
1086 -
Compass. First description of a
magnetic compass by Chinese scientist Shen
Kuaby, (Shen Kuo) in the Song Dynasty,
about 100 years earlier than its first
record in Europe by Alexander Neekam in
1190. The compass was introduced to the
Arab world and Europe during the Northern
Song Dynasty (960 -1127).

1200 - 13th
Century: Mongol rulers move capital to
Beijing and start building up square.
1368 - Ming
Dynasty (1368-1844): The emperor Zhu
Di constructs the Gate of Heavenly
Succession from which Ming rulers
promulgate new laws. The square is walled
off, and only the emperor and his court
are allowed access until the early 20th
century.
1651 - The
gate is rebuilt and renamed Tiananmen
(Gate of Heavenly Peace).
1774 / 00 -
During the reign of Qianglong, the
borders of China were expanded to their
greatest extent ever. His reign was the
time of the greatest prosperity during the
Qing Dynasty. However, there are also
signs of internal problems. Popular
uprisings occurred during this time, but
they were all put down. The first uprising
was in 1774 A.D. in Shantung,
1774 / 00 - In
1775 A.D. another uprising occurred, this
time it was led by the secret society
known as the Society of the White Lotus.
In 1813 A.D., during the reign of
Qianglong's successor, another uprising
occurred which was led by the secret
society known as the Society of Heaven's
Law. The government, while they succeeded
in suppressing the uprisings, did not
succeed in alleviating the impoverishment
that had led to these uprisings.
1839 / 00 -
In 1839 A.D. the opium trade was
abolished. This set off a war with Great
Britain that
1842 / 00 - In
1842 A.D., China was forced to sign a
treaty in which Great Britain received
Hong Kong, and ports were opened to
European trade. The terms of this treaty
were not fully carried out by either
side.
1857 / 00 - In
1857 A.D., fighting again broke out. The
British again won and the Chinese were
forced to grant more privileges to the
British, that virtually turned China into
a British colony.

Mao Tsetung was born December 26, 1893.
City of Shao-shan, Hunan province.
Died &endash; September 9,
1976.
1904 / 08 -
Deng Xiaoping. Born: 22-Aug-1904
Birthplace: Xiexing, Sichuan Province,
China Died: 19-Feb-1997 Location of
death: Beijing, China. Deng Xiaoping was a
leader in the Communist Party of China
(CPC). Deng never held office as the head
of state or the head of government, but
served as the de facto ruler of the
People's Republic of China from the late
1970s to the early 1990s.

1919: Students protesting loss of
territory to Japan after World War I,
gather on May 4, prompting the famous "May
4th Movement" and sparking scattered
nationalist demonstrations at the square
throughout the next decade.

1909-1911 A.D., CHINA revolutionaries won
and the Republic of China arose.
1919 / 00 - The

Jiang Zemin was born in August 1926.
He studied electrical engineering as
his major and received his degree at the
prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Committee and as the Mayor of
Shanghai
1942 - Hu
Jintao Born in 1942. Hu Jintao
officially hails from Jixi, a town in
Anhui province. But other published
reports suggest his hometown was Shanghai,
or perhaps Taizhou in Jiangsu
province.
1943 / 00 - Mao
Tsetung in Wade-Giles) was the chairman of
the Politburo of the Communist Party of
China from 1943 and the chairman of the
Central Committee of the Communist Party
of China from 1945 until his death in
1976. Under his leadership, the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) became the ruling
party of Mainland China after victory over
Chinese Nationalists, the Kuomintang, in
the Chinese Civil War.
1946 / 00 -
Jiang Zemin joined the Communist Party of
China in 1946.
1947 / 00 -
Jiang Zemin graduated from Shanghai
Jiaotong University in 1947. During his
college years, he participated in the
CPC-led student movement against Chiang
Kai-shek's autocratic rule, and joined the
Communist Party of China in 1946.
1949 - China
Civil War.
1949 / 10 - On
October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of
China was formally established, with its
national capital at Beijing. Mao Tsetung
announces the People's Republic of China
to thousands of cheering supporters."The
Chinese people have stood up!" declared
Mao Tsetung as he announced the creation
of a "people's democratic dictatorship."
The people were defined as a coalition of
four social classes: the workers, the
peasants, the petite bourgeoisie, and the
national-capitalists. The four classes
were to be led by the CCP, as the vanguard
of the working class. At that time the CCP
claimed a membership of 4.5 million, of
which members of peasant origin accounted
for nearly 90 percent. The party was under
Mao Tsetung's chairmanship, and the
government was headed by Zhou Enlai (
1898-1976) as premier of the State
Administrative Council (the predecessor of
the State Council).
1949 / 10 - The
Soviet Union recognized the People's
Republic on October 2, 1949. Earlier in
the year, Mao Tsetung had proclaimed his
policy of "leaning to one side" as a
commitment to the socialist
bloc.
